Our class analyzed over 1000 pages of Victor Klemperer’s two volume diaries that spanned the entire Nazi period. Klemperer’s diaries represent one experience of the Holocaust: it’s important to note that the circumstances that made it possible for Klemperer to survive the war without deportation, including the protection of a pre-Nuremberg Laws mixed marriage, would not have been available to Jews living in Eastern Europe or the lands conquered by the Nazis after war broke out. You can explore elsewhere on our site to learn more about ways that Jews and non-Jews in other contexts attempted to navigate and resist Nazi restrictions and violence.
